But the truth is, the creative process can take unpredictable turns: we research, sketch, try new mediums, edit \u2026 and we end the day with less finished art than we\u2019d like. What to do in the meantime? Should we share the messy, unfinished, frankly not so good work that happens in between the good stuff?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last night, I decided I would. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeking a place to draw, I passed a Starbucks and a cheery pub in favour a quieter spot: the 1840s room at the TATE Britain. Having sighted a mother and daughter contemplating Sargent\u2019s \u201cCarnation, Lily, Lily, Rose\u201d, I started to sketch them from behind a large easel. But the ladies soon moved on, and I turned to the real reason I was there.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.bogglingbooks.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Screenshot-2019-11-17-at-15.13.50.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-128 lazyload\" width=\"336\" height=\"375\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 336px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 336\/375;\" \/><figcaption>Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose by John Singer Sargent  \u00a9tatebritain<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>Truth is, <\/em>I confessed to the paintings hanging on the walls,<em> I\u2019m hear to ask for your help.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The canvases, who\u2019d been quietly chatting with one another, glanced up, and I resisted the temptation to rip my sketch off the easel, as Waterhouse\u2019s <em>Saint Eulalia<\/em> said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWell, for one thing, don\u2019t just settle for the first composition that comes to mind! Turn it on its head. Well, don\u2019t.
